Transgender

The clinic is a LGBTQI+ inclusive place and all people are welcome at the clinic for hair removal treatments. Cathy understands and appreciates that it may be embarrassing for you to come for treatment (especially in the genital area), and will do everything possible to put you at your ease.

Hair removal for transgender clients is recommended to be undertaken with electrolysis as it is the only guaranteed method for permanent removal. Some patients use  L.A.S.E.R., only to find at least some of the hair comes back again several months or years later.

With all electrolysis treatments, the time frame is dependant upon a number of factors such as pain threshold, the density of hair being treated, skin sensitivity, and frequency/duration of treatments.

Removal of beard hair or preparation for gender affirmation surgery (vaginoplasty and phalloplasty) is totally possible at the clinic with electrolysis. The treatment does take time and it may be good to keep it mind that it is rather like a "marathon and not a sprint".  It is very normal for the hair removal for the vaginoplasty and phalloplasty to take a minimum of 12 to 18 months. As stated above, there are a good many factors that will influence successful completion of treatment. One thing that certainly helps is a clear motivation  and reminding yourself of the end goal.

Many clients find that topical local anaesthetic creams/gels such as EMLA, L.M.X.4 and Ametop help in reducing some discomfort whilst being treated. These should be applied to the relevant area at least one hour before treatment. Cathy can advise you about this and other possible options.

Funding

For the beard area, you may be entitled to a set amount of hours paid for by the NHS. Your Gender Identity Clinic (GIC) will discuss this with you. The NHS pays for all the pre-surgical electrolysis treatment after being notified by your surgeon.  All you have to do is nominate me as your preferred Electrologist and I'll be in contact when I hear about the nomination.

Other hair removal treatments which are outside the scope of the NHS funding (i.e. beard and pre surgical site for vaginoplasty and phalloplasty) would require you to self fund further treatment.
